Construction Begins, Buildings Take Shape
OHS’s New Road Ahead expansion project has made great progress since construction began earlier this summer. The project includes two new buildings next to OHS’s Ernest C. Swigert Animal Shelter that will house a Behavior Rehabilitation and Rescue Center, Animal Crimes Forensic Center, and a Community Teaching Hospital. To date, the project is on budget and on schedule. It is anticipated that the buildings will open in August 2022.
Nearly $32 million of the $36 million fundraising goal for the project has been achieved. “The New Road Ahead would not be possible without the generosity and compassion of our donors,” says Sharon Harmon, OHS President and CEO. “Continued support is critical to meeting our fundraising goal by the end of 2022.”
For the pets and people in our community, these new buildings represent the next phase in creating a More Humane Society. Pet owners who have not been able to afford veterinary care for their beloved family members will have a new option. The Community Teaching Hospital will offer low-cost, high-quality veterinary care to help keep pets and people together. The Behavior Rehabilitation and Rescue Center will provide expert resources and care for the most vulnerable animals. The Animal Crimes Forensic Center will be the first facility on the west coast dedicated to processing and analyzing evidence to hold animal abusers accountable.

New Road Ahead Project Quick Facts
- 21,498 square feet – Size of the building housing the Community Teaching Hospital and Animal Crimes Forensic Center.
- 13,876 square feet – Size of the Behavior Rehabilitation and Rescue Center.
- 2,875 tons – Amount of rock, asphalt and concrete removed from construction site. Formerly designated industrial use, the Oregon Humane Society is transforming this space into a tranquil landscape with bioswales, rain garden and a dog walking path that connects to our existing native woodland.
- 25 acres – Land allocated for the New Road Ahead project
- 60 jobs – Approximate number of jobs that will be created when the New Road Ahead’s expanded programs and services open in late summer 2022.
