How Do I Help My Anxious Pet Prepare for a Visit to the Vet?
We want you and your pet to feel safe, comfortable, and prepared for their visit to the vet.
Our team at the Community Veterinary Hospital is skilled at helping ease anxious pets. Check out their tips below for making your vet visit a good one.
Tips to Help Your Anxious Pet
Sometimes the biggest hurdle is getting the pet to the car. Check out these tips from our Training & Behavior team:
- Make sure your pet is wearing a collar with a name tag and your contact information before leaving home. A scared pet will do anything they can to escape a carrier or leash. Pet identification can help in the event your pet runs away.
- Normalize the crate by leaving it open and accessible in a common space with treats, bedding, catnip, or beloved toys.
- If your dog is anxious in the car, we recommend going on a walk, hike, or run before getting into the car for their vet visit. Exercise will reduce some of their anxiety.
- Play soothing music during the car ride to calm their nerves.
- Our veterinary team is trained in Fear Free techniques to ease pets’ anxiety at the vet. If you and your pet have specific needs to ease their anxiety, please speak to our staff at the front desk.
We know it can be hard to remember what’s important to bring to your pet’s vet visit. Here’s a quick checklist:
- Your pet’s prior medical records, including the names, phone numbers, and email addresses of clinics where you pet has been seen before.
- A list of their current medications, including the brand of their flea, tick, and heartworm medication.
- The brand of food they eat and any treats they receive, including dental treats.
