Meatball Inspires a Gift to Animals

How a Shelter Cat Left a Lasting Legacy

In honor of National Estate Planning Awareness Week, we celebrate Nancy and Meatball’s story. Like Nancy, you can also leave a legacy recognizing your passion for helping animals when you create or update your estate plan.

Nancy fell madly in love with Meatball the cat the moment she saw him. Meatball had just arrived at Oregon Humane Society Portland Campus as part of a Second Chance transfer from Klamath Falls. “The shelter in Klamath Falls named him Meatball, which perfectly fits his personality”, says Nancy. His adorable face won her over, complete with round cheeks that resembled a meatball, the reason for his namesake. “He was at the front of his kennel, flirting with everyone. As soon as the door would open, he would be in your lap. I just had to have him.”

Nancy was able to meet Meatball upon his arrival at OHS because she is among a team of valuable volunteers at the shelter. In 2014, she retired from her career as a high school chemistry teacher. Having been an animal lover her whole life, Nancy had been drawn to OHS’ work and mission for decades. She knew she wanted to be involved and help animals and has now been volunteering for nine years. Nancy volunteers three days a week and her duties include preparing kennels for new shelter pets, socializing cats in the Behavior and Rescue Center cattery and helping adopt out pets. “It is the highlight of my week to help the cats at the shelter,” says Nancy.

Nancy’s involvement with OHS also extends to the care Meatball receives. She brings Meatball to the Community Veterinary Hospital regularly for his wellness checkups. “I want to support the CVH because I know, as a full-paying client, the funds will be used to help others who don’t have the ability to pay,” says Nancy.

Four years later, Meatball is now eight years old, and Nancy adores having him be a part of her family.

When the time came to make plans for her future, Nancy thought of Meatball. Her love for Meatball, and connection with the shelter pets she works with every week, motivated her to include OHS in her estate plan.

“I want my estate to go to the places that have enriched my life. OHS has great leadership, staff, and an army of volunteers who know how to effectively run an organization and care for animals in need. It was an easy decision to include OHS as a beneficiary on my financial accounts.”
