Acting to save the lives of pets, OHS has seized 41 felines and one dog from a Milwaukie man who had been under investigation for animal neglect. The pets were removed July 10 from a single-family home in the Jennings Lodge area of Milwaukie.
The pets are now being treated at the OHS Holman Medical Center. The first group of approximately 15 cats is expected to be available for adoption beginning July 24. Other cats—including a litter of kittens—will be available as soon as they are healthy enough to go home.
“We are treating the rescued cats for a variety of conditions, including respiratory issues and eye infections,” said Dr. Kris Otteman, OHS director of shelter medicine. “We are also providing quite a bit of dental care and we believe these cats will recover well and make good pets.” Most of the cats are well socialized and enjoy being with people.
Owner Releases Pets to OHS
The recent seizure of the animals, performed under a search warrant served by OHS and Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office, stemmed from a concerned citizen’s report of possible animal neglect. After the cats were removed from the property, the owner relinquished ownership to OHS, paving the way for adoptions to begin.
“We are glad that the owner realized he was overwhelmed by having to care for so many pets and needed help. If you don’t spay and neuter your cats, a home with just a few cats can become a home with dozens of cats,” said Dr. Otteman.
