In the last two weeks, an unusually high number of cats have been surrendered to OHS from the public. Working with individuals in five Oregon counties, OHS Investigators have received more than 70 pets from owners who were on the verge of not being able to care for their cats.
“We were able to help these pets before the conditions they were living in became neglectful. That’s a win for the cats and our community,” said Sharon Harmon, OHS chief executive officer. The owners of the cats voluntarily gave them to OHS in the hopes they could find better homes.
The surrendered cats received health exams by OHS and will be treated for any medical conditions. The OHS cattery staff reports that many of the cats are already friendly toward people and should make good pets. Many are already available for adoption and others will soon become available after spay/neuter surgery or treatment for health issues. Photos and descriptions of all OHS cats available for adoption can be found online here.
OHS received eight cats yesterday, including several seniors. Big Charlie, for example, is a 12-year-old male cat who is social and in generally good health. “We’re seeing quite a few elderly cats from these recent surrenders, and older cats take much longer to be adopted,” said Harmon. “We hope the public will open their hearts to these pets and consider adopting a mature feline.”
Big Charlie, from Linn County, came in with other older cats such as Bobby, a 10-year-old white male with one green eye and one blue, and Maude, a 14-year-old red tabby.
Every cat adopted from OHS is spayed or neutered and comes with a microchip ID, collar and tag, initial vaccines, courtesy veterinarian exam, 30 days of free PetPlan health insurance for Oregon residents and plenty of post-adoption support.
OHS is located at 1067 NE Columbia Blvd. in Portland (directions). Shelter hours are 10 am–7 pm Sunday through Wednesday, and 10 am–9 pm Thursday through Saturday. For more information, call (503) 285-7722.
