Sullivan the Therapy Dog, a deaf boxer mix, found his way from a shelter in California into Allyson’s home. With her degree in social work and proficiency in American Sign Language, Allyson was determined to adopt a deaf dog. In Sullivan, she got more than she could have ever imagined.

As a therapy dog, Sullivan is a friendly presence for kids to practice their reading. His comfort helps those who are struggling to open up. Sullivan may not be able to hear, but his impact on the mental health of those around him speaks volumes.

The CEO at Willamette Valley Multiple Listing Service, a member of a group of local businesses in Salem who care for a feral cat colony, recognized that it wasn’t enough to just feed the feral cats in the area. She knew that the population could quickly get out of control if the cats weren’t spayed and neutered.

The kittens that were born to the colony were socialized and found homes as beloved pets. The group’s work to make a difference in the lives of feral cats shows that anyone can step up to make their neighborhood a more compassion place.

Meteor was transported to OHS from Lanai Cat Sanctuary to free up space in Maui County to help pets directly affected by the wildfire.

Meanwhile, Dianna and her son who had visited Lani Cat Sanctuary a few months earlier formed a special bond with Meteor. When she discovered he’d been moved off the Island to another shelter, Diana went on a mission to find him.

Her determination took her from Michigan to Oregon to be reunited with Meteor and bring him home.

Virginia Borden comes from a family of first responders and has a deep commitment to serving her community.

After working as a 911 dispatcher for several years, she noticed a critical gap in services for injured animals – particularly wildlife. She founded OCCRA, On Call Community Rescue for Animals, to fill this need.

She joined Oregon Humane Society’s Technical Animal Rescue Team to learn the skills necessary to rescue injured animals overnight, on weekends and holidays.

Bentley’s Coffee, named after the owner’s energetic Yorkie/Shih Tzu mix, raised thousands of dollars
for shelter pets through Every Cup Feeds a Pup promotion.

On their 10th anniversary, Bentley’s Coffee generously donated 100% of their daily sales—
over $22,000—to OHS.

In honor of sweet Bentley’s 17th birthday, the
team hosted a donation drive at each of their five locations to collect pet toys and other supplies.

The Standard has been supporting OHS for more than 25 years and donated close to $500,000.

In 2023, through their Workplace Giving Program, The Standard employees designated nearly $60,000 to OHS – demonstrating their dedication to creating a More Humane Society.
