Thirty-one cats and kittens from flood-ravaged Louisiana arrived at the Oregon Humane Society yesterday to get a second chance at life. The first of the newly arrived cats are expected to be available for adoption tomorrow.
The pets came to OHS from Acadiana Animal Aid, a nonprofit shelter outside of Lafayette, Louisiana. Acadiana, which was not hit by flooding, is helping other Louisiana animal groups struggling to cope with a huge influx of animals from residents who can no longer care for their pets and from other shelters that are no longer operational.
Acadiana reports that they are taking in animals that were already in Louisiana shelters, having been surrendered or brought in prior to the flooding. With more space available, those shelters that are still operational can now take in animals that have been lost or displaced due to the flooding, and will hopefully reunite these pets with their families soon.
The pets were flown into Hillsboro Airport thanks to a network of organizations that are working to save thousands of pets. The recent transfers of cats and kittens to OHS and other shelters marks the first time the Louisiana shelter has been able to partner with other groups to find homes for cats.
“Every pet that arrives at OHS from Louisiana represents a life that has been saved,” said Sharon Harmon, OHS executive director. “OHS has a long history of helping other shelters and we were glad to lend a helping hand during this disaster.”

WHERE ARE THE 31 CATS FROM BATON ROUGE???
My Friday ( my service dog in my pic) came from OHS almost 2 years ago and we are now back living in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and are survivors of the flood. We just wanted to say to any owners out there that may have relinquished their kitty and it went to OHS, they will be well cared for! OHS is a great group of people. Also I would like to say thank you to OHS for helping out down here we need all the help we can get!
So glad Oregon came to the rescue.
