OHS Partners with PAW Team

A Paw-sitively Amazing Paw-tnership

For the clients of Portland Animal Welfare (PAW) Team, home is where their beloved pet is. Their clients all have a different story to share. Some are unhoused, some live in shelter, while others face financial hardship that restricts their access to medical care for their companions. But the animals that visit PAW Team all have something in common: families who love them dearly and have found a safe haven in the services offered at PAW Team, who help ensure they are in good health no matter their family’s financial situation.

It’s a rainy afternoon when Oregon Humane Society Veterinarian Dr. Kirk Miller arrives with two veterinary students, as he does every week to help PAW Team’s Wednesday Wellness Clinic. It’s a partnership between two animal welfare organizations with a shared goal of keeping more pets with the people who love them.

For PAW Team, these clinics ensure a reliable source of care to see more of those in need. Meanwhile, Oregon State University veterinary students are able to get hands-on experience working with clients during their shelter rotation at OHS.

This afternoon the OSU students are Janine and Jenna. They have back-to-back appointments to      provide routine wellness exams and check the overall health of each pet under the gentle guidance of Dr. Miller.

Back in the clinic, Jenna and Janine spend the afternoon getting to know their furry clients and administering vaccines, flea and tick preventatives, and microchips. They give nail trims and even send a pet home with medicated shampoo and guidance for keeping skin irritation under control. The well-stocked clinic of PAW Team is all thanks to donors. Sam Martinico, PAW Team Clinic Manager, estimates that 90% of the supplies on hand are donated and most of those supplies can be costly. Like all services at OHS, all the care provided to animals is thanks to the generosity of donors.

OHS and PAW Team are both providing support 365 days a year to pets in need. The work of providing aid to animals in our community and this incredible partnership cannot be done without your support!
