OHS and Portland Rose Festival announce Canine Court and Grand Marshal

Diesel the Mastiff named Grand Marshal of the Grand Floral Parade

In celebration of Portland’s love of pets and the Oregon Humane Society’s 150th anniversary, the Portland Rose Festival has designated a canine as the Grand Marshal of the Grand Floral Parade for the first time in the event’s history. Four additional dogs were named to the Canine Court and will participate in various Portland Rose Festival events.

Diesel, an English Mastiff, won over the celebrity judges with his handsome looks and creative costume to earn the Grand Marshal title. “He’s kind of a rock star,” said Jennifer Veitch, Diesel’s companion. “Everyone wants to talk to him and pet him and he loves it.”

The five members of the Canine Court were selected from a field of 20 finalists during a festive ceremony at the Heathman Hotel. The dogs walked the red carpet and displayed their talents for a panel of celebrity judges.

The Canine Court includes:

Diesel, English Mastiff, 2.5 years old – Grand Marshal

Burt Usher, Terrier Mix, 9 years old

George, Pit Bull/Basset Hound Mix, 10 months old

Jackson, Pembroke Welsh Corgi, 12 years old

Molly, Golden Doodle, 2 years old

Diesel, the Grand Marshal, will ride in the Spirit Mountain Casino Grand Floral Parade, which will begin at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 9 at Memorial Coliseum. There will be a public meet and greet with the Canine Court following the ribbon cutting on Friday, May 25.
