Petco Foundation Invests in Lifesaving Work of the Oregon Humane Society
Grant of $300,000 will extend efforts to save more animal lives in Oregon
OHS has been awarded a $300,000 grant from the Petco Foundation to support its efforts to provide critical medical care to pets in need and help preserve the animal-human bond.
The Petco Foundation investment will help OHS create a Community Teaching Hospital in Portland slated for opening in 2022. The hospital will provide accessible veterinary care for pets and will help treat animals with medical conditions. For low-income or under-resourced pet owners, reduced cost veterinary care can truly save an animal’s life while keeping loving families together. Veterinary services offered at the Community Teaching Hospital will include annual examinations and vaccinations, spay and neuter surgeries, dental procedures and more.
“Every animal deserves access to high-quality medical care, regardless of their circumstances,” said Sharon Harmon, OHS President and CEO. “We are very grateful to the Petco Foundation for their support, which will ensure that every pet who comes to us gets the care they need.”
This grant investment is part of the Petco Foundation’s recent distribution of more than $13M to animal welfare organizations nationwide. In addition, the Petco Foundation distributed $1M in emergency product and cash donations to partner organizations facing the challenges of the COVID-19 crisis and put out a national call to mobilize animal lovers to take action and Pledge to Save Pet Lives.
The Oregon Humane Society has responded to the challenges of the pandemic, while continuing to provide critical, lifesaving services to pets in need. Adoption-by-appointment has ensured that pets can still find loving homes; pet food has been delivered to shelters around the state; Humane Special Agents are in the field investigating animal cruelty and neglect; and the Holman Medical Center at OHS has continued to operate with new protocols to keep staff safe.
