I Need Help With a Found Cat in the Salem Metro.
First steps.
- Ask around locally to see if anyone recognizes the cat.
- If you have no luck, bring the feline into a local veterinary clinic to scan for a microchip.
- If the cat isn’t microchipped, post their photo on social networks and flyers in your community.
- Post to online forums (see below).

Next steps.
Each county has different rules for what to do if you find a cat. Click on the county where the cat was found to learn what resources are available to you.
Marion County does not provide any sheltering or services for cats.
If the cat is not in a life-threatening situation, your best option is to leave the cat where you found them. If the cat is in a life-threatening situation, please bring them to the nearest emergency veterinary clinic.
NOTE: Do not bring cats to Oregon Humane Society. OHS is not an emergency clinic.
Oregon Humane Society Salem Campus provides services for Polk County stray cats.
The first step to bring a Polk County stray cat to OHS is to fill out the Polk County Stray Cat Questionnaire for each cat you wish to bring in. After we receive your questionnaire, a staff member will contact you to review the animal’s profile and discuss the next steps in the intake process.
All intakes are by appointment only and we do not accept walk-in animals. Appointments are scheduled once the known behavioral and medical history of an animal has been reviewed.
